Jaara lives in a time when those given certain powers by the Gods are hunted down and enslaved for their gifts. Newly captured, she is forced aboard a slave ship and soon sold to the king of the new land she’s been brought to.

Intrigued by her rare gift to feel the world around her, he gives Jaara a task that, if completed, will win her his favor for life. Determined to survive, Jaara agrees to do the king’s bidding, even if she now must deceive a visiting prince from another nation while venturing with him and his men into a dark jungle to fetch what rumors say only someone with her gifts can retrieve. 

But when the king sends his most favored slave to protect Jaara and to aid her in the chore, they grow reluctantly close, despite Jaara's wavering loyalty after the prince offers her something better than favor — freedom. As Jaara's task grows more precarious and nations move against one another in a pursuit for power, she becomes caught between the many bargains she has struck and soon learns that there is more than favor or freedom at stake.
